Middle School Nears Completion
The first school to be built with Measure K funds is scheduled to be completed in the next few months. Jessie Elwin Nelson Middle School in Signal Hill is now more than 80 percent complete, and on schedule to receive finishing touches by January 2012. The school will open next September.
The project, several years in the planning, involved first demolishing buildings formerly occupied by GTE and then building the new school on the 10-acre site.
The school will serve about 850 students in grades
6-8, serving one of the most densely population areas in the district. With 89,000 square feet of building space, Nelson will be handicapped accessible throughout, and the campus will include 31 classrooms, an administration office, library/media center, gymnasium, health office, serving kitchen, multipurpose room and other support facilities.
Outdoor facilities will include a soccer field, five basketball courts and an open quad area.
