Browning High Opens to 9th Grade Class

Brand new Browning High School in Long Beach opened its doors Aug. 30 to its first class of 150 ninth graders. The third small high school to be opened in LBUSD in the last four years, the $81 million, 10-acre campus will ultimately serve about 800 students in grades nine to 12. A new ninth grade class will be added each year for four years.

A/C Plans Move Forward

The first phase of a plan to bring air conditioning (A/C) to all LBUSD schools is starting this fall, with installation of portable classrooms at four "hub" sites, where some students will temporarily attend while their home school is modernized. The LBUSD Facilities staff is fast-tracking a three-year plan to complete air conditioning at the first group of schools in greatest need.

LB Firm Ensures School Safety

The year was 1954: The average cost of a new car was $1,700. Gas was 22 cents a gallon and Elvis Presley had just released his first commercial record. Dwight Eisenhower was sitting in the Oval Office, and Twining, Inc. opened its Long Beach office and laboratory on Airport Way.

PE Building, Labs Open At Sato

This school year, students at Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science returned to find some new features on campus: a physical education building, a science lab and a computer integrated manufacturing lab.

The old gymnasium had been demolished due to seismic safety reasons.

The Long Beach Unified School District and Long Beach City College partnered recently to host a Contractor Outreach Fair, designed to promote local business participation in upcoming school bond projects. The event drew about 100 individuals, representing a variety of construction fields.

Larkins Brings Business Skills

A self-described "Army brat", Walter Larkins was born at Fort Leonard, Missouri and before the age of two moved to Germany. He settled with his family at age eight in Los Angeles after his father’s retirement.

Following in his father’s footsteps, the younger Larkins also served in Germany with the U.S. Army.
